RESTORATION REPORT: In the spring of 1996 we were informed that a number of OV-1D Mohawks were to be dropped from service by the 224th MI Battalion at Hunter Army Air Field, Savannah, GA. We filed letters of intent with the GSA system for all 15 available airplanes. About a month later we were allotted two aircraft:68-15946 and 68-15947. We were lucky to have gotten two aircraft that were built alongside at the Fort Stewart, FL. Grumman plant.
Now came the problems of moving the aircraft off government property within thirty days. Being a special plane and not many being produced, finding a pilot with a current LOA in type was difficult. First, an N number had to be obtained from the FAA in Kansas City who had difficulty in advising what form they would accept to prove ownership. A call to acting head of FAA, Mr. Barry Valentine, solved the problem but that took six weeks. The Lone Star Flight Museum in Texas provided leads for Ferry Pilots. We were informed that a Mr. Wally Sanders in Dothan, AL., who was currently operating a Mohawk had a pilot, Mr. John Neher who was willing to help us. Mr. Neher was an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, AL. with 7000 hours flying the Mohawk. Mr. Neher agreed to fly the Mohawks to Beaver Falls, PA. at no cost, and provide check rides for our Pilots. Mr. Jack Roethlisberger, pilot and AP mechanic, met Mr.
Neher at Hunter Field and delivered our first Mohawk - 947 in April 1997.
The aircraft required very little restoration work as the Army kept the planes in good order. We did fly both aircraft but sold 68-15946 in 2006. Mohawk 68-15947 is currently airworthy and available for
the 2007 Air Show season.
